Sitcoms and cartoons dominate Netflix: America’s streaming preferences analyzed
In this installment of Jumpshot’s Netflix streaming analysis, it became clear that Netflix’s original series are rising in popularity. In July alone, the amount of individuals who binge-watched original content grew by 36 percent month-over-month, while the overall audience remained the same. As for the other shows, all of the top ten shows binge-watched in July were 30 minute comedies. Read on for the full breakdown of Americans’ streaming preferences.
Top ten shows binged and watched on Netflix in July
We analyzed the Netflix streaming activity of “binge watchers,” who watch a minimum of five episodes a day, and “casual viewers” who watch at least 20 minutes of a show in a day, to detect viewership trends and MoM changes. Our data indicates that while the total Netflix audience increased by less than a percent since June, the audience of Netflix’s original series has grown significantly. In fact, the overall volume of Netflix originals binge watchers increased by 36 percent MoM.
Family Guy took first place for binge watchers for the second month straight, accounting for nearly a fifth of the binge-watching activity in July. Family Guy was also the most popular show for causal viewership. July’s findings were consistent with previous trends we’ve found, as 57 percent of binge watchers and 53 percent of casual viewers for the top ten show categories streamed adult cartoons.
As for the rest of the list, everyone’s favorite zone-out shows made the cut, including Friends, The Office, and How I Met Your Mother. Pokémon Go’s popularity seeped into Netflix as well, as the Pokémon: Indigo League audience grew by 16x since last month, and brought in 10x more binge-watchers.

How do Netflix’s original series compare?
Our data consistently indicated that Netflix’s original series are gaining traction, as the audience has doubled throughout Q2, and continued to grow in July. More interestingly though, the binge-watching viewer-base of Netflix original series grew by an amazing 36 percent since June, while the binge-watching activity for non-originals increased by a measly 4 percent.
This astonishing growth rate is consistent with the dramatic spike in viewership following a new season release. In July, new Netflix original series releases dominated the most binged list, taking five out of the top ten spots, and six out of ten of the most viewed list.
BoJack Horseman exemplifies this trend, as the third season was released on July 22nd and instantly became the most binge-watched Netflix original series. The show’s binge-watching viewer-base in July was 9.5x larger than June’s, and accounted for about one quarter of the overall Netflix original series binge-watching audience. Stranger Things is another example, the sci-fi show premiered on July 15th and took third place for binge-watching activity.
It’s worth noting that Orange Is the New Black’s audience defies the shortened shelf-life trend we detected for shows on Netflix, as it maintained the lead for the most popular Netflix original series for casual viewers in July; more than a month after the release of its fourth season. We also looked back at the viewership trends of season three and found that while season three’s audience decreased by 72 percent in the second month following the release, season four’s audience was cut by a little more than half month-over-month.
